» Rejoice in perfect God and perfect man. Cherish the majesty and might of God and the dignity and soundness of God’s spiritual idea, man. (See Science and Health, p. 259.)
» Erase the fear of the patient as well as your own anxiety. God is Love and knows how to control and care for all His spiritual creation. Man is exempt from disease and danger. Delight in these facts. (See Science and Health, p. 411.)

It had been a long Thursday. There had been a paper to write, an abrasive person to deal with, and seemingly countless other small things weighing me down. But in spite of a day’s worth of consecrated prayer, I crawled into bed that night pretty sure that I had made no progress that day. Close to tears, I closed my eyes to fall asleep.
As I lay in the silence, the thought came to me: “If Fed Ex can guarantee overnight delivery, surely God can do even better.” I had to laugh out loud. The more I study Christian Science, the more I’ve gotten used to feeling the presence of God. On a regular basis, thoughts come to me that are so clearly not my own thinking, that I just know they are Love’s angel messages. But this one was stranger than usual.

It’s amazing how time has ceased to be an issue at all for me…every day is just so full. I almost don’t know what to write! Everything has been such a blessing, and an opportunity for blessing…there’s not just one over-arching story.
One thing I’ve been very grateful for is that while many sights and activities have been so new and breathtaking, I’ve really felt at home for the most part. I suppose that some of the things I’ve been doing and seeing are pretty exotic compared to my experiences before this, but it also feels very natural.

I’ve grown rather accustomed to mentally tuning out the music my daughters play, often at competing volume levels, from their respective bedrooms. But one afternoon as we drove in the car a favorite of my older daughter’s came on and I really started listening to the words. What I heard from the gravely voice of rock band Nickelback’s lead singer shocked me, but in a good way for once. He sang:

Opportunities for growth constantly present themselves to each one of us. When I consider and make life choices, I direct my thought towards God and remind myself that no matter what decision is made, God always blesses me. This open perspective takes the stress out of every decision, and leaves my thought open to God’s direction.

The Christian Science Monitor reports (April 7, 2008) that 400 drivers in Denver are having gizmos called accelerometers installed in their cars. Why? It’s a test program to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The accelerometers will track driving habits and point out ones that waste gas and lead to greater pollution. The hope is that drivers will change any bad habits when those habits and their effects are exposed.
Great idea. But here’s a greater one: having a Godometer.
A Godometer?
Yep. An accelerometer flags bad driving habits, but a Godometer flags any thoughts we have that aren’t Godlike—thoughts that could have some pretty nasty effects if we indulge them. It checks everything that flows through our consciousness and lets us know if it’s Godlike or not.
It’s an important distinction. As Mary Baker Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 462), “Are thoughts divine or human? That is the important question.” And it’s what the Godometer lets us know. How does it do it? By determining the origin of each thought. Mrs. Eddy puts it this way: “How are veritable ideas to be distinguished from illusions? By learning the origin of each” (Science and Health, p. 88). She then continues, “Ideas are emanations from the divine Mind. Thoughts, proceeding from the brain or from matter, are offshoots of mortal mind; they are mortal material beliefs. Ideas are spiritual, harmonious, and eternal. Beliefs proceed from the so-called material senses . . . .”

I thought I’d share how I ended up in Boston doing this music internship after expecting to be at acting school in Chicago for the next four years. Maybe this will help someone in a place of transition—looking for direction.

Good heavens. It’s been a wonderful couple of weeks. This weekend I went to Addo Elephant Park near Port Elizabeth, and we must have seen over 100 elephants, along with bushpig, warthog, red hartebeest, and zebra. It was beautiful to see these animals in their natural environment. The bush is very thick here - such a diversity of plant and animal life. It was a great backdrop, to have these images in thought during the drive back to the farm the next day, as we talked about the current (and possible future) state of affairs in South Africa politically, socially, and economically. It was the first sunny, dry day in weeks, so I took the cordless phone out to the deck to settle into my Adirondacks chair and listen to my friend. She really needed to talk about a relationship problem she was having. Just as I sat down, a bee flew directly into the corner of my eye and stung me. I was startled, and the pain was excruciating. Right away, I turned my attention to God, expecting from past experience that the fear I felt welling up in me would dissolve under the influence of all-powerful Love.

Fear is the source of all problems. At least most of my challenges have been rooted in fear.
When I am stressed out about upcoming tests, papers, midterms, and finals, I first address my fear of failing, of not articulating my thoughts clearly on paper, and of nervousness on the big day. Every time I have prayerfully handled the fear, I have been able to move with grit and grace throughout the respective experience.
