Please join us for our continuing series of live chats with Sunday School teachers and superintendents around the world. This month, we’ll explore an arena that has lots of room for expression and adaptation: Sunday School resources.

At the heart of Sunday School there are three primary resources defined in the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy: the Bible, the weekly Bible Lesson and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. But what is the best way to instruct students “according to their understanding or ability to grasp the simpler meanings of the divine Principle they are taught?” Many of today’s students find it helpful and inspiring to learn via a wide variety of media including video, graphics, audio, games, and interactive web media. Using these wisely in a lesson plan can make for a rich, engaging experience for everyone. So how can this media be used to introduce the ideas of “absolute Christian Science” and successfully lead students back to the Scriptures and “their textbook,” Science and Health? How can Sunday School teachers around the world share with each other when they create things that work really well in their classes?

Listeners to this chat are invited to send in questions live via computer. Susie Rynerson Jostyn and Chet Manchester of TMC Youth will provide answers based on their collective experience as students and teachers and will present a few new resources available on the Internet, on tmcyouth.com, and used in branch churches around the world.

The chat will be hosted live in English on www.tmcyouth.com. Everyone is also invited to stop by the Reading Room at 194 Massachusetts Ave. in Boston, MA to listen in with the public and a group of local Sunday School teachers.

If you can’t join the chat, you can post questions beforehand in the Sunday School Discussion Forum on the website and listen to the recorded chat afterwards.

Please join us for our continuing series of live chats with Sunday School teachers and superintendents around the world. This month, we’ll explore a topic near and dear to the heart of anyone who loves Sunday School: Growing Sunday School.

The Christian Science Board of Directors has been giving a lot of thought and prayer to growth in our Church. How does this prayer include and embrace the growth of our Sunday Schools? What are some of the impositions on thought that would keep young people and families from the benefits of the Christian Science Sunday School? How can The Mother Church and its branches work and pray together about growth in accordance with the Church Manual?

Listeners to this chat are invited to send in questions live via computer.

Sunday School Roundtable Chats

A new series of live Web chats sponsored by TMC Youth

Part 2: Teaching the (Littlest) Children
With Shannon Hodgins and Susie Rynerson Jostyn

Sunday, March 30, 2008,
3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. EDT

Join us for our new series of live chats with Sunday School teachers and superintendents around the world.

This month, in part two, we’ll explore the fun and expansive opportunity to teach the very littlest children.

  • There’s no lower age limit for Sunday School, so how can we teach infants?
  • What are good learning activities for children who haven’t learned yet how to walk, talk clearly or read?
  • As they progress, how can we be sure we’re still instructing children “…according to their understanding or ability to grasp the simpler meanings of the divine Principle…?” (Church Manual, p.62)

TMC Youth host, Susie Rynerson, will share news of her recent Sunday School workshops in Australia and California. She along with Shannon Hodgins, Superintendent and teacher for the Sunday School at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Victoria, BC, Canada, will take up your questions. Shannon has a degree in child and youth care focused on early childhood education, but has drawn most heavily on the Manual and weekly inspiration from the Bible Lesson to guide her as she has taught Sunday School for the littlest ones for over 20 years.

The chat will be hosted on this site live in English. Shannon and Susie will field questions sent in via computer during the hour. If you can’t join the chat, you can post questions beforehand here in the Sunday School Discussion Forums or listen to the recorded chat afterwards.

How do you receive Sunday School students?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

What's happening in Sunday School

Some students have attended a Christian Science Sunday School since they were born, while others may be attending one for the first time. This experience gap can be hard to manage both as a teacher and a student. But, one Sunday School teacher in Paris, France discovered how natural it was to conduct class no matter the background of her students or the size of her class.

The Prophet Jeremiah (Part 4)

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Jeremiah

You may know the story of Samuel who heard the voice of God calling him. Wouldn’t that be cool if you could just pick up a telephone and talk to God? Well, maybe that isn’t too far-fetched. The prophet Jeremiah certainly heard the voice of God and was prompted to write down what He said. In this final podcast about Jeremiah, Elaine Follis talks about how God is always speaking, and maybe you’ll find new insights on how to listen.

Take a listen to this third episode about Jeremiah to find out what makes a modern-day prophet, and maybe you’ll discover that you already are one!

Sunday School Roundtable Chats

A new series of live Web chats sponsored by TMC Youth

Part 1: Super Superintendents
With Laurie Scott and Susie Rynerson

TMC Youth is hosting a fun and informative new series of live chats with Sunday School teachers and superintendents around the world.

In part one, we explored the role of Sunday School superintendents in Christian Science Sunday Schools. We talked about how superintendents around the world are thinking about:

  • Opening and closing exercises?
  • Choosing the music?
  • Finding good teachers?
  • Attracting new students?
  • Handling discipline problems?
  • Communicating with students and their parents?

TMC Youth host, Susie Rynerson, shared news of her recent Sunday School workshops in South Africa. She, along with Laurie Scott, Superintendent of The Mother Church Sunday School in Boston, took up listener questions sent in via computer. Laurie has taught Sunday School in 5 different branches in 3 countries. She also served as superintendent for a small branch where the Sunday School grew—in just one year—from having no students to five full classes.

The chat is in English. We invite you to listen to the recorded chat at your convenience.
