Sunday School Roundtable Chats

A new series of live Web chats sponsored by TMC Youth

Join us for our continuing series of live chats with Sunday School teachers and superintendents around the world. This month, we are introducing new technologies to complement the regular audio portion of the chat, which seems appropriate considering our topic. Sunday School wouldn't exist if it weren't for the pupils. They are referenced twelve times in Church Manual Article XX about Sunday School. They are to be "instructed according to their ability," and all questions and answers in class should be adapted to them. With directions like those, many teachers have found it helpful to get to know their students better. So who are the Sunday School pupils of today?

Students today are not the same as when Mary Baker Eddy wrote the Church Manual and founded the Christian Science Sunday School. They aren't the same as they were even 10 years ago. They are thinking, communicating, and participating in many different ways. But that doesn't mean everything about Sunday School needs to change. What should remain the same? What needs to be adapted to today's students?

Susie Jostyn will host Julie Furbush, a recent Sunday School graduate who has done extensive research about today's students, Tom McElroy, a Sunday School teacher and Christian Science youth lecturer, and Mike Davis, a researcher from The Mary Baker Eddy Library. They'll all provide answers to the above questions and more, based on the Church Manual, as well as their collective experience.

The chat will be hosted and questions can be sent in live online in English on www.tmcyouth.com. The Reading Room at 194 Massachusetts Ave. in Boston, MA, will be open to the public and local Sunday School teachers to participate via computer.

If you can't join the chat, you can post questions beforehand in the Sunday School Discussion Forum on the website and listen to the recorded chat afterward.
